The System

How K&T works

Knob-and-tube was the standard way to wire American homes from roughly the 1880s into the 1940s. Individual hot and neutral conductors run separately through the framing, supported on porcelain knobs where they run along joists, and passed through ceramic tubes where they cross through them.

That open, spaced-apart layout wasn't decorative. The conductors shed their heat into the surrounding air, and the spacing kept the wires off the wood. For the electrical loads of 1920 (a few lights, a radio), it worked.

The catch is that everything about a modern home violates those original assumptions: bigger loads, grounded appliances, and, most critically, insulation packed into the spaces the wiring needs to stay open.

Why This Matters in St. Louis

Our housing stock is K&T-era

U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey data puts the median year built for housing in the City of St. Louis in the late 1930s, with more than half of the city's homes built before 1940, among the oldest housing stocks of any major U.S. city.

That means an enormous share of the metro's brick homes, in the city's historic neighborhoods and the older inner-ring communities around it, was originally wired with knob-and-tube. K&T is a two-wire system: hot and neutral only. There's no equipment ground, which is why K&T circuits end in two-prong outlets and can't safely serve grounded appliances or surge protectors.

The conductors run exposed through joists and studs, held off the wood by porcelain knobs and tubes. That open-air spacing is how the system sheds heat. Remove it, and the design assumption breaks.

The rubber and cloth insulation on K&T conductors becomes brittle over decades, and most surviving K&T carries generations of splices, extensions, and amateur modifications it was never designed for.

Undersized for Modern Life

K&T was installed for a few lights and small appliances per floor. Modern kitchens, HVAC, and electronics draw loads these circuits were never intended to carry.

Why Insulation Contact Is the Problem

Knob-and-tube conductors were engineered to dissipate heat into free air. When blown-in, rolled, or foamed insulation envelops them, that heat has nowhere to go. Conductor temperature climbs, the aging rubber insulation on the wire breaks down faster, and the surrounding insulation material itself can be exposed to ignition-level heat.

The National Electrical Code addresses this directly: NEC 394.12(5) prohibits knob-and-tube wiring in hollow spaces of walls, ceilings, and attics where loose, rolled, or foamed-in-place insulating material envelops the conductors.
